A New Generation of LARP Action – WarBall LARP & Cosplay Club for Santa Rosa Junior College

WarBall LARP & Cosplay Club (WLCC) at SRJC brings to life iconic Super Heroes and classic Vikings, Samurai, etc.

For Cosplay, students are encouraged to use the club’s events to participate in costumes.

Live Action Role Play (LARP) is a popular group activity attended by thousands of people annually.

Its participants interact in a simulated environment reproducing past battles with physical force with the use of weapons and armor.

Even more popular amoung young people is Cosplay, or Costume Play, involving fictional characters at events such as ComicCom, etc. and local venues.

Insurance carriers please accept this risk analysis and descriptive narrative as a critical element for the Club’s genesis and a new era for the growth of LARP

WLCC’s version of LARP is dramatically lower in risk and but as a new concept, insurance is critical for it to be established.

For our school, SRJC management can view the great attention to safety paid herein with an eye on risk/reward.

WLCC offers inclusive student engagement of a immersive activity that is safe for a broad range of body types who may have missed playing sports for fear of injury, lack of size or gender exclusion.

WLCC LARP involves History and Super Heroes, with costumes and attention to the conflicts of the past as learning experiences. Off field events in Cosplay brings in students who enjoy role playing in this manner.

Their presence will greatly add to the fun and festive vibe WLCC’s rules promote -there is no ‘kill or be killed’ mentality and violence is kept to a minimum.

Given the visuals of the Club’s culturally popular characters on and off field, and its athletic entertainment, it is reasonable that the club will grow in popularity, offering a chance for great student engagement.

The athletic, history, drama, music and dance departments or clubs representing these genre can contribute. If this happens, the student body will respond in support and Student Life will be enhanced.

Safety First

WLCC SRJC, since its inception, made participant safety is THE guiding principle in its design and organization.

Conventional LARP involves both safe and unsafe historical weaponary, depending on the event’s organization. They engage in group combat with these weapons, with and without armor, and have rules of conduct to limit injuries.

However it has no organized team strategy or clear objectives and has a chaotic riot of players improvising as they go. And, without clearly established victor LARP has failed to achieve as representative of a historical “battle simulation”.

What is the WLCC?

WLCC serves to improve LARP’s chaotic and uncontrolled elements by adding structure to its battle reproductions while also reducing risks. To do so, it takes the best safety aspects of LARP and borrows structure and safety from another sport, and this hybrid greatly deviates from the dangers of both:

  • Warball LARP and Cosplay Club uses the 100 plus years of safety development of American football to minimize the chaos, control interaction, interject strategy and reduce risk.
  • However, there is no conventional tackling or blocking as found in football . WLCC has devised benign techniques for take downs/impeding a player that makes high speed collisions a rarity, and body shots to the head or knee are nearly impossible.
  • Participants are required to limit force- only using enough to ‘get the job done’. It has a name: “Payload Rule”

The sum of these efforts is a LARP event like no other, rewards in the form of s that help progress the team down field that encourages safety, skill, beauty and artistry.
